How to Apply and Reapply Anhydrous Sunscreen

How to apply anhydrous sunscreen, in short: use about two finger lengths for the face and neck, apply it as the last skin care step in the morning, give it a few minutes to settle, reapply every two hours when you are outdoors, and remove it with a cleanser in the evening.

A waterless sunscreen goes on a little differently from a lotion, and a few habits make it work better. This guide covers how much to use, the order in your routine, wearing it under makeup, reapplying and removing it, using Skinolin's Anhydrous Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ as the example. The same steps work for any waterless sunscreen.

How much to use

Most people use too little sunscreen, and too little means less protection than the number on the pack. For the face and neck, use about two finger lengths of sunscreen: squeeze a line along your index and middle fingers. Water-free textures spread easily, so it is tempting to use less. Measure it the first few times until you can judge it by eye.

Step by step

  1. Cleanse your face and pat it dry.
  2. Apply your serum and moisturizer and give them a minute to absorb. Dry skin especially benefits from a moisturizer first.
  3. Squeeze the sunscreen onto your palm and dot it over the face and neck: forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck.
  4. Spread it in gentle, even strokes until it is absorbed. Do not rub hard.
  5. Let it settle before you go out. Follow the product label for how long to wait before sun exposure. A few minutes is enough before makeup if you are staying indoors.

Wearing a waterless sunscreen under makeup

Apply sunscreen after your moisturizer and before makeup. Wait a few minutes until the surface feels dry, then apply foundation with a light hand. A matte finish helps makeup sit well. If your makeup slides, use less moisturizer underneath, or press the sunscreen in with clean fingertips instead of rubbing.

When and how to reapply

  • Reapply every two hours when you are outdoors, and after sweating, swimming or toweling.
  • Indoors, away from windows, one morning application is usually enough. If you sit by a window, treat it like being outdoors.
  • Over makeup, add a top-up with a powder or mist sunscreen, but do not rely on it alone: it should add to a proper morning layer, not replace it.

A water-free base does not make a sunscreen water resistant by itself. Only a product tested and labeled water resistant makes that claim.

How to remove it

Water-free sunscreens can feel slightly oily, so cleanse them off in the evening. A gentle cleanser is enough for most days. If you wear heavy makeup or have been outdoors in sweat and dust, cleanse twice. The Niacinamide Daily Cleanser is soap-free and gentle on the skin barrier.

Common mistakes

  • Using a pea-sized amount for the whole face.
  • Skipping the neck and ears.
  • Applying sunscreen first and layering creams over it, which can thin the layer.
  • Not reapplying outdoors.
  • Skipping sunscreen on cloudy days: UVA passes through cloud and windows.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply anhydrous sunscreen?

After your moisturizer, spread about two finger lengths over the face and neck, wait a few minutes, then apply makeup or step out. Reapply every two hours outdoors.

Can I use a waterless sunscreen under makeup?

Yes. Let it settle for a few minutes first. A matte finish suits most makeup.

Should I apply it before or after moisturizer?

After. Sunscreen is the last skin care step in the morning, before makeup.

How do I remove a waterless sunscreen?

With a gentle cleanser in the evening. Cleanse twice after a day in sweat or with heavy makeup.

Do I need to reapply if I stay indoors?

Usually one morning layer is enough if you are away from windows. Reapply if you go outdoors for long.

How long does a bottle last?

Used properly every day on the face and neck, a 50 ml bottle lasts roughly a month to six weeks. If it lasts much longer, you are probably using too little.

Can I apply it on the body?

You can, but the face and neck amount is a guide for the face only. Use a generous amount for any area, and reapply as directed.

How long should I wait before going out?

Follow the product label for application instructions, and let the sunscreen settle into an even layer before you go outdoors.
