Moisturizer or Sunscreen First? The Right Morning Order

Moisturizer or sunscreen first? Moisturizer first, sunscreen last. Sunscreen works by forming an even protective film on the surface of your skin, so it needs to go on top of your other skincare, not underneath it. Apply your moisturizer, give it a minute or two to settle, then apply sunscreen as the final step of your morning routine, before any makeup.

That is the whole rule. The rest of this guide explains why the order matters, how long to wait between the two, where a moisturizer with SPF fits, and how to adjust the routine for oily and dry skin.

Why sunscreen goes after moisturizer

Most skincare is designed to soak in. Sunscreen is designed to stay on the surface as a thin, even layer. That difference decides the order:

  • Sunscreen on top keeps its film intact. If you apply moisturizer over sunscreen, you rub and dilute the layer you just applied, which can leave gaps.
  • Moisturizer underneath gives sunscreen a smooth base. Sunscreen spreads more evenly over hydrated skin than over dry, flaky patches.
  • Your other steps still work. Serums and moisturizers go on first, so they are in contact with your skin, not sitting on top of a sunscreen film.

So if you have been asking "sunscreen or moisturizer first", the answer is the same either way you phrase it: sunscreen goes on after moisturizer, every time.

How long to wait between moisturizer and sunscreen

About a minute or two. You want the moisturizer to have settled into the skin so it no longer feels wet or slippery. If you apply sunscreen too soon, the two mix on your face and the sunscreen can turn streaky or pill into little rolls.

A simple way to fit it in: apply moisturizer, then brush your hair or make your tea, and come back for sunscreen. After sunscreen, follow the product label for how long to let it settle before you go outdoors, and wait a few minutes before makeup.

The full morning order

Step What it does Skinolin example
1. Cleanser Removes oil, sweat and leftover product from the night Niacinamide Daily Cleanser
2. Toner (optional) Adds a first layer of hydration and refreshes skin Hydrating Toner Mist
3. Serum (optional) Targets a concern such as dullness, dryness or redness Niacinamide Glow Serum
4. Moisturizer Holds water in and supports the skin barrier All-in-1 Moisturiser with SPF 30
5. Sunscreen Protects against UVA and UVB; always the last skincare step Anhydrous Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++

The thinnest products go on first and the thickest last, and protection always comes after treatment. Our guide to skincare routine order walks through every step, morning and night.

What about a moisturizer with SPF?

A moisturizer with SPF combines both steps in one product, which is useful on busy mornings and on days you are mostly indoors. The All-in-1 Moisturiser with SPF 30 works this way, with niacinamide, ceramides and hyaluronic acid alongside SPF 30.

There is one catch. To reach the SPF on any label, you need to apply a generous amount, about two finger lengths for the face and neck. Most people use much less moisturizer than that. So on days you will be outdoors, treat a moisturizer with SPF as your moisturizer and still apply a dedicated sunscreen on top.

If you use both, the order does not change: moisturizer with SPF first, sunscreen second. The Hydra-locking Duo with SPF 50 pairs these two products.

First moisturizer or sunscreen if you have oily skin?

The order is the same for every skin type, but the amount changes. Oily skin still benefits from a moisturizer, because skin that lacks water can feel oilier, not less oily. Use a light layer, let it settle fully, then apply a matte sunscreen in two thin layers. Our guide to which sunscreen is best for oily skin covers the textures that stay comfortable.

And with dry skin?

Dry skin needs the moisturizer step most. Apply it on slightly damp skin after your toner or serum, give it a little longer to settle, then smooth sunscreen on gently instead of rubbing. If sunscreen tends to look patchy on your dry areas, see which sunscreen is best for dry and combination skin.

Sunscreen and makeup

Sunscreen comes before makeup. Let it settle for a few minutes so your foundation does not slide. The SPF in foundation or powder is a bonus, not a replacement, because you would need to apply far more makeup than anyone does to reach the number on the label.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing sunscreen into moisturizer in your palm. It dilutes the sunscreen and makes the film uneven. Apply them one after the other.
  • Applying sunscreen on wet moisturizer. Wait a minute or two.
  • Applying moisturizer on top of sunscreen. It disturbs the protective layer. If your skin feels dry at midday, a light layer of moisturizer and then a fresh layer of sunscreen works better.
  • Relying only on the SPF in a moisturizer on outdoor days. Add a dedicated sunscreen.
  • Forgetting to reapply. Every two hours outdoors, and after sweating or wiping your face. More detail is in our guide on how to choose and use sunscreen.

Frequently asked questions

Moisturizer or sunscreen first?

Moisturizer first, sunscreen last. Sunscreen needs to sit on top as an even layer, so it is always the final skincare step of your morning routine, before makeup.

Sunscreen before or after moisturizer?

After. Apply your moisturizer, wait a minute or two for it to settle, then apply your sunscreen.

How long should I wait after moisturizer before applying sunscreen?

About a minute or two, until the moisturizer no longer feels wet. Applying sunscreen too soon can make it streaky or cause pilling.

Can I mix sunscreen with my moisturizer?

It is better not to. Mixing dilutes the sunscreen and can leave an uneven film with less protection. Apply them as two separate layers.

Do I need a moisturizer if I use sunscreen?

Most skin types benefit from both. A moisturizer holds water in and supports the skin barrier, and sunscreen protects against UV. On days you are mostly indoors, a moisturizer with SPF can combine the two steps.

Is a moisturizer with SPF enough on its own?

On indoor days it can be. On days outdoors, add a dedicated sunscreen on top, because most people apply less moisturizer than is needed to reach the SPF on the label.

Does serum go before moisturizer and sunscreen?

Yes. The usual morning order is cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and then sunscreen. Serums are thinner, so they go on first.

Should I apply moisturizer again before reapplying sunscreen?

Only if your skin feels dry. Blot away sweat or oil first, add a light layer of moisturizer if needed, let it settle, then apply a fresh layer of sunscreen.

Do I need sunscreen at night?

No. Sunscreen is for daytime. At night, finish your routine with moisturizer, and cleanse your sunscreen off properly before bed.

The short version

Moisturizer first, sunscreen last, with a minute or two between them. The same order works for oily, dry and combination skin. A moisturizer with SPF can cover indoor days, and on outdoor days a dedicated sunscreen goes on top and gets reapplied every two hours.
