Skincare Routine Order: What to Apply First, Step by Step
The right skincare routine order is simple: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. Serum or moisturizer first? Serum first, because it is thinner. Toner or serum first? Toner first, because it preps clean skin for the serum.
The rule behind all of it is to go from the thinnest, most watery product to the thickest, and to finish the morning with sunscreen as the protective top layer.
Below is the order for morning and night, why it works, how long to wait between steps, and which steps you can skip.
The rule: thinnest to thickest, treatment before protection
Skincare layers work best when each product can reach your skin. Watery products such as toners and serums spread easily and sink in quickly. Creams and lotions are thicker and form a light seal on top. If you apply a cream first, a watery serum on top of it has a harder time reaching the skin. So the thin, targeted steps go first and the richer, sealing steps follow.
Sunscreen is the exception to "soaks in". It is designed to sit on the surface as an even film, which is why it always goes last in the morning, after moisturizer and before makeup.

Morning skincare routine order
- Cleanser. Removes oil, sweat and leftover product from the night. A gentle one such as the Niacinamide Daily Cleanser suits every skin type.
- Toner (optional). Adds a first layer of hydration and refreshes skin. Mist the Hydrating Toner Mist and pat it in.
- Serum (optional). Targets one concern, such as dullness, dryness or redness. Two to three drops is usually enough.
- Moisturizer. Holds water in and supports the skin barrier. The All-in-1 Moisturiser with SPF 30 adds sun protection on indoor days.
- Sunscreen. The last skincare step, every morning. The Anhydrous Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ is a matte, waterless option.
Night skincare routine order
- Cleanser. At night it has more to remove: sunscreen, makeup, sweat and pollution. If you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup, you can cleanse twice.
- Toner (optional). Same as the morning.
- Serum or treatment. Night is a good time for a hydrating or calming serum, or for any treatment your doctor has advised.
- Moisturizer. The final step at night. No sunscreen needed.

| Sunscreen | Yes, always last | No | Follow the product label before going out |
Serum or moisturizer first?
Serum first, then moisturizer. A serum is light and concentrated, designed to deliver its ingredients to the skin. A moisturizer is richer and is designed to hold water in. Put the serum on clean skin, wait about a minute, then seal it in with moisturizer.
People ask this question both ways, "first serum or moisturizer" and "moisturizer or serum first", and the answer does not change with skin type. The only practical tweak: on very dry skin, apply the serum while your skin is still slightly damp from the toner, then moisturize promptly to lock the water in. Our guide to how to choose and use a face serum explains the technique.
Toner or serum first?
Toner first. A toner is the thinnest step, almost like water, and it goes on straight after cleansing. It adds a little hydration and leaves skin ready for the serum. If you do not use a toner, go straight from cleanser to serum. Our guide on what a toner does and when to use it covers whether you need one.
Where other products fit
- Eye cream: after serum, before moisturizer, patted gently around the orbital bone.
- Spot treatments: after serum, on the spot only, before moisturizer. Follow the product label or your doctor's advice.
- Face oil: usually last at night, over moisturizer. In the morning, sunscreen still goes on top.
- Moisturizer with SPF: in the moisturizer slot. On days outdoors, add a dedicated sunscreen on top. Our guide on moisturizer or sunscreen first explains why.

Do you need every step?
No. The essentials are cleanser, moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen. Toner and serum are useful extras, not requirements. A short routine you follow every day does more for your skin than a long one you skip. If you are just starting, begin with the three essentials and add one step at a time, about two weeks apart, so you can see how your skin responds.
For a simple starting point, the Daily Essential Skincare Duo pairs the cleanser with the toner, and the combos collection has sets for most skin types.
Layering active ingredients
Order is only half of layering. The other half is not overloading the skin. Add one new active ingredient at a time. Niacinamide is gentle and pairs well with most routines, which is why it is in several Skinolin products. If you use stronger actives, such as exfoliating acids or retinoids prescribed by a doctor, keep the rest of the routine simple and wear sunscreen every morning. Our guide to how to use niacinamide serum covers what it pairs with.
Common mistakes
- Moisturizer before serum. The serum then sits on top of a cream and reaches the skin less easily.
- Sunscreen before moisturizer. Rubbing moisturizer over sunscreen disturbs the protective film.
- No waiting time. Layers applied too fast mix together and can pill.
- Too many products at once. More layers is not more care. It raises the chance of irritation.
- Skipping sunscreen on cloudy or indoor days. UVA passes through cloud and glass.

Frequently asked questions
What is the correct skincare routine order?
In the morning: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. At night: cleanser, toner, serum or treatment, moisturizer. Go from the thinnest product to the thickest.
Serum or moisturizer first?
Serum first. It is thinner and designed to deliver its ingredients to the skin. Wait about a minute, then apply moisturizer to seal it in.
Toner or serum first?
Toner first, straight after cleansing. It adds a light layer of hydration and leaves skin ready for the serum.
Moisturizer or serum first if I have dry skin?
Still serum first. Apply it on slightly damp skin, then moisturize promptly so the moisturizer can hold the water in.
Where does sunscreen go in a skincare routine?
Last, every morning, after moisturizer and before makeup. Let the moisturizer settle for a minute or two before applying it.
How long should I wait between skincare steps?
A few seconds after toner, about a minute after serum, and a minute or two after moisturizer before sunscreen. Follow the product label for how long sunscreen should settle before you go out.
Can I skip toner?
Yes. Toner is optional. If you skip it, go straight from cleanser to serum or moisturizer.
Do I need a serum?
No. A serum is useful if you have a specific concern, such as dullness, dryness or redness. The essentials are cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen.
How many products should a skincare routine have?
Three to five is plenty for most people: cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, plus a toner or serum if you want them. Add new products one at a time.
The short version
Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning; the same without sunscreen at night. Serum goes before moisturizer, toner before serum, and sunscreen always last. Keep it short, give each layer a moment to settle, and add new products one at a time.
